Evaluation Questions

Evaluation Questions

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our teaser trailer we tried to make it look like any other horror film by using many typical conventions such as the colour red and dark colours etc. we also used many techniques by editing which made it look realistic. We used a variety of people that would be featured in horror films such as the protagonist and the victim. We did not put a 'hero' within the trailer as we tried very hard to make it a 'teaser trailer' and not to give anything away. With practice, we managed to use the editing suit very well to create our teaser trailer. We used techniques that other horror films would use such as flashing, dark colours, horrifying music etc, but were very challenging as we could never create something of a professional view, but we did try and are very pleased with our finishing product. Many films inspired us to use techniques and create our plot.

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

We created a teaser trailer consisting of the genre 'Horror' and with that; we created products to promote the film. We created a poster containing the setting and an over shoulder shot which creates mystery and makes the audience want to watch the film to find out how mysterious the film is. We used the slogan on the front of the poster which is chilling and questionable and makes the audience wonder what the film is about. We made sure that not only is our trailer and teaser, but our poster too. We did the same for the film magazine. We used similar images and the same slogan and chilling colours but again, not letting the secret of the film away. We used many images around the main image to actually advertise the magazine itself, but we also used an image within the film which had a heading of 'inside news' which makes the reader want to buy the film as it is giving you some information that you wouldn’t get much out of the teaser trailer nor the poster. The magazine is the only source of information that the reader is going to get, other than looking on the internet, but again, if we were to create the whole of the magazine, we want everything about the film to still be a tease and not let the reader know much about it, in order for them to go out and watch the film itself.

3) What have you learned from your audience feed back?

When some of the media group saw our film, we had a lot of positive comments which we were very pleased about as we tried very hard to make it a good horror film. We were praised on the good use of conventions, the camera shots, the eerie quick shots, the techniques used within editing and the music. We have learnt that the audience is after chilling music to create suspense and tension and keep them on their toes toward the end of the trailer to make them want to know more. We also found that the use of quick shots and white flashes creates again suspense and adds to the tension building music. Overall, we discovered that audiences are after chilling and tension building editing and music. We found that without music, the trailer would be boring and there wouldn’t be much suspense. We didn’t have much criticism apart from the use of font and how it popped up every now and again. We agreed that we did have trouble in that area and tried to make it work, but had difficulty matching up to proper horror films. Overall, the audience loved our teaser trailer.

4) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We used many media technologies in the construction of making our teaser trailer such as the editing of our product in the editing suite. We used a computer to write notes and go on the internet for research like looking at many other horror teaser trailers, posters and magazines. We even looked at some websites out of interest. We took notes on everything and took a personal interest and even learned things we didn’t know before that was useful in making our products. We planned ahead by making a time plan, changing it when we had to, but making it very clear on what we had to do and by when. That way, we were on time for everything and very organized. When we came to the evaluation stages, we enjoyed looking over our research and our finishing products and writing about them on the computer to put on our blog.

setting analysis

Walmer Castle
We think that Walmer castle would work well for the setting of our film as it is aged and eerie. It is local to where we live therefore would be very practical, the only problem we face is finding out it would be available for hire and whether there would be a cost for this. However the setting would work very well.

The Beach
We are also considering make our film setting Walmer beach as this is a very lonesome place at night. Its quiet and can be very scary. Especially by the pier. This would work well for out film setting although it would be weather permitted and therefore a risk to base our entire film there.

Yasmin’s House
We think that Yasmin’s house would work well as not only is it practical but we would have the entire house to film in. We could therefore take different shots from different rooms, (rather than the beach, where its all the same) and have more variety. It also ensure that we can film not matter the weather or time of day, as we have artificial light and gas heating.

Horror Films

· Hide and seek

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9uEkTPchIo

Within this trailer, there are many different effects and points that we would like to be able to use in our trailer.

· Cutting to different scenes
· Close ups
· Cross cutting
· Fast movements
· Fast flashing to different images
· Overhead shots
· Wide shots
· Fading in of images and words
· Camera moving a dolly backwards as girl comes towards
· Lights flashing on and off
· Slow movements as the scene gets intense
· Towards the end, it gets faster as it flashes through the images
· Ends with the title fading in dramatically

We used this trailer as an inspiration to our trailer using certain images and effects.
Within this teaser trailer, genetic iconography was found such as there being the typical victim in horror films and the ‘psychopath’. In many horror films, there always seems to be someone to the rescue, which was featured in this trailer and many people murdered. Colours were used in the trailer to signify something bad such as the colours red and black. Locations were eerie and the music had a typical scary feel to it to create atmosphere and suspense. This trailer has used genetic iconography to make it a typical horror film.

The ring

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5CvZGv8yNs

Within this trailer we picked up effects from it that would be helpful and useful in our teaser trailer. It is similar in that effect.

· Close ups
· Wide shots
· Over shoulder shots
· Distortion
· Fast camera movements
· Cross cutting
· Fast cross cutting
· Flashing from different scenes
· Screams
· Slows down when getting to the title, when its being released and the website
· Flashes in the credits
· Scary images

This helps us with the credits as well as effects which is useful when creating our teaser trailer.
This trailer consists of the typical iconography outcome using the characters as victims, protagonists, and the main villain. There are many films like this one, being supernatural and using terrifying images and lettering to scare its audiences. The colours featured in this trailer are dark and with a chilling blue which puts you on edge. Many supernatural films use colours such as blacks and electric blues to create the supernatural feel. The typical sound tracking to this trailer is like any other, frightening, chilling and tension building.

Amityville horror

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcEbHag-nsk

· Fading in
· Flash backs
· Quick flashes
· Black and White flashbacks
· Newspaper reports
· TV News reports
· Fast flashes telling you the background of the film very briefly in news papers
· Hints
· Quotations
· Slogans
· Haunted house being advertised in the paper within a couple of seconds of the trailer
· Present day (date) home video of family moving in the house
· Held camera effect
· Flash of the house present day
· Quick flash of house in a ‘negative’ effect
· Short facts of the film in words fading in
· Quick cross cutting/ Flashes
· Close ups
· Overhead shots
· Wide shots
· Cutting fast from scene to scene
· Sound effects – rain, thunder, screams etc
· Flashes of scary images (fast)
· All fast until it reaches the title
· Slows down and title fades in with the haunted house in the background
· Background goes black as the title ‘coming soon’ fades in

In this particular trailer, again it has the typical victims and the psychotic protagonist but in this case, the protagonist being possessed. It is again a supernatural film with a supernatural feel to it containing dark colours, eerie locations and terrifying screams. Many horror films have eerie locations and a person screaming as it all adds to the suspense and the tension building of the film.
In looking at the trailers more, we have learnt new ways of making our film better by looking at our characters a bit more, the colours used, and our locations and how they would fit with the genetic iconography

In the trailers that I have watched and analysed, I have noticed that as the trailer goes on, it speeds up, but slows down when revealing the title of the film. This will be helpful when we come to do our teaser trailer.

film magazine analysis

The magazine title is right at the top of the page. However in this particular case the magazine designer has used a bright background, with a lot going on. And used quite plain fonts, It gives the same effect but is simply done differently.
The majority of the cover is dedicated to the ‘x-men’ film. The main character of the film is situated in the centre. This is to encourage fans to buy the magazine. Also, the actors film name is titled right at the top of the page, in white on a black background, with text saying ‘Wolverine’ is returning to ‘Empire’ insinuating he is only interviewing with this magazine.
Although I don’t think the white font works very well on the bright blue background. It can be hard to read as it has blend with the back slightly.

The magazine title is right at the top of the page and in a large, bold font. This is to ensure its really noticeable who the makers of the magazine are.
There is a lot happening on the cover, however Johnny Depp in right in the focal point of the page. This is because he is a big star, he is recognized by many. Having his image in the centre will attract fans attention to the magazine.
Using a plain black background attracts the reader’s attention to the actors on the cover and the text.
On the left hand side of the page there is an advertisement for a free poster, this has been don’t to convince people to buy the magazine. It has been made clearer by using font to contrast with the background, (white on black).
There is also a relevantly large text in an unusual colour saying, ‘exclusive interview’ this is for big fans that will want to know everything about Johnny Depp. An unusually font has been used to ensure it is noticed by viewers.

examples of websites

Hide and seek

http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/hide_and_seek/

The names of the actors are in bold red font. It draws your attention to them and lets you know who is in the film. Certain actors might attract certain people and would want to see the film more than others.
The title of the film is in bold white font and easy to see. The white font on the black background makes it look like a scary film as the contrasts of both colours are stereotypically scary.
In bold red writing, it shows you the site for the film as well as the white bold font showing you the release date.
It gives you an option to view the trailer. Again, it is in large red font and easy to see
Slogan is red and stands out. It is very effective in that sense. The slogan sounds scary. It originates from a Childs game, but this film makes that saying anything but innocent.

examples of websites

The ring

http://www.ring-themovie.com/

Odd images have been used, some to indicate some images in the film. They are effective as they stand out and move when you run your mouse over them.
The background is black and black usually signifies scariness and it creates more of an atmosphere to a scary site. It adds to the effect of it being a horror film.
There is an option of hyperlinks leading to different things that the viewers might want to look at. It is in bold white writing underlined with red which draws attention to the viewers.
There is an option to see the trailer so you don’t have to come off the website to look elsewhere. Again, it is bold and noticeable and given us help in creating our website as we wouldn’t of thought of it before.
When you run your mouse over some of the images, they get bigger with a heading of what you are going to be looking at.

Before you enter the site, it shows you the date in which the DVD will be released, as well as the release date of the film. It draws your attention to the DVD box in the middle of the screen as it is bright, colourful and hard to miss. It says ‘Enter the site’ at the bottom in bold writing which indicates that you are not actually on the site until you click on that

As you enter the site, it comes up with the title of the film and flashes to different scenes which were too fast for me to print screen. It is very effective as it shows the audience not only the site but the scenes within the film. It makes the viewer want to watch the film. It also creates tension and suspense leading up to the actual site.
The effects used are that of flashing, flashbacks of the film and the scenes and words come closer to the screen.

As the introduction to the site continues, it flashes up with a sentence leading on to the title of the film again as seen below. It has disturbances as if watching an old tape.

poster analysis and research

Using a picture of a saw creates recognition for the film title.
Film title is displayed very big in colours a lot different to the rest of the poster. To ensure it stands out.
A list of all the people involved, mainly done for recognition in case the audience specifically like someone in particular, although also there as a gesture.
List of sponsors, yet again in case the audience like someone in particular.

The film slogan is right at the top of the page for recognition.

His eyes have been made this black in contrast with his white face, It is to attract attention to the broken glass and look spooky

Title of the film is kept very large and bright

The film release date is also rather large and bright so it’s easily noticed

This particular poster has been kept very minimal. This has worked well in this case as when looking at the poster the first thing that is noticed is release date and the title. That is why it has been created like this.

A lot of black is used; black is a very morbid and unhappy colour. This may act as a metaphor for the film

Directors name.

Title of the film

Film slogan, mainly put there for recognition.

names of people who starred in the film, etc are written here as a kind of advertisement and gesture.

The poster of 'The Grudge' straight away tells you it is a horror film with the colours and the scary image. The creator of the poster has used dark colours to show the eerie side of the film and included blood red font as the title in bold capital letters which catches the eye. The image creates a scary feel to the poster as the eye peers out of her hair straight at you so it makes the audience scared to look at it but at the same time intrigued and wanting to watch it as it looks scary and appeals to that particular type of audience.
The slogan at the bottom is white and bold so that the viewer can see and observe it. ‘It never forgives. It never forgets’. That slogan refers to the title of the film ‘The Grudge’ and gives the viewer a hint of what the film could be about. Someone who can’t forgive someone nor forget what has happened and possibly wants revenge. The release date is featured in bold red letters at the bottom of the page along side the small font advertising who is featured in that film. The credit are not that important otherwise would be the same large font at the rest.

This poster of 'Final Destination' doesn’t tell us anything about the film, just creates a terrifying atmosphere by using a disturbing image with a great effect to it to stun the audience. The colours are significant because by using dark colours, it creates a scary feel to the poster and tells the audience that it is a horror film.
The title of the movie is featured in the centre of the poster at the bottom in white bold lettering so the audience knows what the film is called. It has the release date just under the title in bold red font, again being bold and noticeable enough to the viewers.
The poster of 'saw' is very simple but effective, using simple images and simple fonts, the poster in itself still looks scary and you can tell it is a horror film. The images of the saw and the teeth is a hint to what the film is about and you can imagine how disturbing and horrifying the film might be. The images are big and attract the eye as well as the title of the film, slightly moved to the side, with the images taking up most of the poster. The title is effective as the font is unusual, big, bold and black with an effect on it which makes it look broken up and distorted. The slogan at the bottom is not as important at the title and the images but is still important hence why it is bigger than the credits featured at the bottom of the page. The slogan is in capitals and is still quite bold and easy enough for the viewers to read and focus on.

teaser trailer analysis

We intend to use editing similar to this. Using a bright white/blue ring on a black background creates real contrast. Yet again you are attracted straight to where you’re supposed to be. Using simple words like ‘You Die’ (in capital letters) makes such threatening words seem simpler, less threatening. Insinuating its a lot easier to be killed then at first perceived.

This is another long shot. Using a clear white door creates contrast between the dark walls. This attracts the audience’s attention to the door. Making them think something scary is behind it. Similar to what we intend to do with our trailer.

With the camera looking down on the boy it makes he seem a lot smaller. Perhaps vulnerable, making what ever he’s going towards is even scarier than we think.

This is a long shot going into a close up. This is where our idea for our trailer comes from. It makes the audience anxious to know what is behind that door. Their eyes are locked on the door.
Making the colour of the walls very bland really attracts your attention to the door, the most important thing in the shot.

As continuing to look over our research, we found that looking over the teaser trailers on other films, there seemed to be an obvious colour tint to the picture. For example, the first trailer we looked at ‘Hide and Seek’, we noticed there seemed to be a dull olive/grey colour to it which seemed to create a chilling atmosphere. Looking at the second trailer, we noticed ‘The Ring’ had the same thing but the colour blue. It seemed to be very effective whilst watching it as it gave us a chill to add to the chiller colour effect. Looking at these trailers, it has given us ideas for the making of our own trailer as we find it very effective and useful.

We done some research to find font appropriate to for our teaser trailer.

the link above refers to the post below and gives you an idea of how many of the population watches horrors.

Throughout our research we have found that horror movies are particularly popular amongst males and under 25's. With over a third of a typical horror movie audience aged 18-24, they are a highly effective means of reaching an audience not afraid to go out at night.

After researching target audiences, I found out that horror films are mostly enjoyed by males than females. After further research as to why this is, I couldn’t find anything that explains that fact.
I feel that horror films mostly appeal to males as males are more prone to liking violence and the whole horror aspect of it. Stereotypically, females do not like violence; gore etc and the whole aspect of a horror movie would just create suspense and is more prone to frightening women than men. Of course the suspense of a horror movie is important to create the atmosphere but woman react to it differently to men.

In horror films, people look for violence and suspense to create a scary atmosphere, gore and horrific images to make it interesting but frightening, the setting is important as well as the colours and last but not least, scenes which make the audience jump.

Target Audiences

Target audiences

After researching audience types and target audiences, we found that most people attracted to horror movies are of the age of 18 – 25.
We found that horror movies contain such things as blood, gore, violence and suspense and we thought that would be perfect for our teaser trailer. We also looked at other teaser trailers to get ideas which have come of a huge help in making our trailer.

I feel our teaser trailer would appeal to 18-25s because it contains everything there age would want such as violence, gore etc. it creates suspense, scenes of terrifying experiences and use of effects such as flashing white lights, fast motion scenes as well as slow motion and many more.

Our trailer contains characters that others might be able to relate to, as well as settings and happenings that people might find interesting. We found that many girls watch horrors if there is an actor in the film which is of their liking, as well as woman that appeal to men. As our trailer has a young man in it, young girls might find that appealing and so would want to watch it. It also contains a girl which might have the same effect to men.

It is based on reality and therefore allows people to relate to it, if someone is watching a horror for the adrenaline then it’s going to be far more frightening if it’s something they can relate to from their everyday life. It makes audiences want to watch it in that knowledge just to scare them. As it may make them believe it is possible to happen to them. Studies show that people watch horror films because they like the excitement and thrill and love to scare themselves.
